<hi style=afpcap>The Army had a policy which tended to favour biplane design for its primary pilot training aircraft, although Fairchild proposed a monoplane as the PT-19. The need for large numbers of military pilots lead the AAC to place huge orders for the PT-19 necessitating the Hagerstown facility to be supplemented by an additional production lines to be opened by Aeronca and St. Louis. In excess of 3,000 PT-19s were produced, with other versions being developed including the PT-23 with a different powerplant, as well as the PT-26 which had covered cockpit canopy for service in colder climates.</hi>
